National Geographic in Kazakhstan

Hi dear my readers:),

About 2 weeks ago the representatives of the National Geographic Journal visited our university and held a guest lecture. I want to share my understanding of this lecture based on my notes. So, here we go!

First speech was given by Alexander Moen, National Geographic's Vice Precident, Explorer Programs. He briefly told about a journal. Actually, referring to him National Geographic is not only Media, but also a scientific organization. A kind of motto of this journal is a belief in science, exploration, education and storytelling to change the world. A National Geographic is about our human story, new frontiers, our living planer, critical species etc. It was astonishing to know that NatGeo has funded more than 12000 projects. Also, the organization has local exploration funds that support different project around the world. Later, he told a bit about statistics. The journal reaches 700 million people each month. Fortunately to Kazakhstan, the NatGeo journal is being published in our country since the February of this year.

Currently, the NatGeo is carrying out several big projects such as Big cats initiative, Sea protection etc. One of them is using DNA to understand how people migrate from Africa to other parts of the world. So, in 2013 a reporter of the NatGeo set out to trace the path of human migration.

The second speech was delivered by this reporter. His name is Paul. Firstly, he gave some background information about that migration. 150000years ago people begun to spread. It started from Africa and spread to all over the world. Probably, Chile was one of the last corners of the world migrated by people. He called this path "a walk into becoming the human". He started his long journey in Ephiopia and have already been in coutries such as Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Cyprus, Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaizhan. Now, he is in Kazakhstan. His walk possesses 2 attributes: walking and storytelling. Obviously, it will be very boring to walk alone. Therefore, Paul often walks with local people. Also, I liked how he named his journey: Out of Eden walk. You can view his photos by using this hashtag in instagram. Importantly, I have forgotten to mention that he is making his journey on foot.

I decided to write about this lecture because it really impressed me. I used to read a lot of fantasy books which are mostly about adventure. Sometimes I dream about travelling around the world with my friends and doing some crazy stuff. So, I hope that this blog will be useful for you. As I have mentioned before the NatGeo journal is publishing in Kazakh; I do not really know how find it or whether it is available online but I highly recommend you to read it.

Thank you very much,

Dastan Orazbaiuly
