Are You Living Authentically?

What really is the meaning behind the words to “living authentically”?  I have read it defined to be authentic is to be yourself, comfortable with yourself, open, living truthfully and free of the pretence that you display to the world in your work and life relationships.  Deepak Chopra writes, “A person who is free has no need to focus on outcomes. He is not tied to the opinion of others. He never forces anything, not the smallest action. He refuses to listen to fear. “

I know from my own experience how easily I took on the role of victim at such an early impressionable age.  I wore a social mask that was thriving on approval and throughout my teenage years made poor decisions because I wanted to fit in and be accepted.  I always worried about what others thought of me.  I was easy prey to those people who wanted to hurt me.  I didn’t trust myself or believe in myself which led to a cycle of victimhood for many years.

There are many people today around the world living life who have taken on the victim role because it is so deeply ingrained subconsciously in their core beliefs. They have created this vision for their lives and while doing so are making choices based on their self-loathing and fear.  They blame others, so indicative in our culture today, for their misfortune and unknowingly denying themselves true happiness. They are setting themselves up to suffer and failure.  We are not perfect and when you “wake-up” and step out of Ego, you will realize you can make the choice not to believe in what others think or feel about you and break the negative cycle of victimhood.

My spiritual journey has led me to love and accept myself and has allowed me to learn to trust myself to finally make the right choices and change the source of self-limiting beliefs.  I am not completely free and it takes practice daily to be immune to criticism, be non-judgemental and live without fear.  In the Course of Miracles there is an affirmation that I practice every morning, “Today I shall judge nothing that occurs”. In my day I continue to reaffirm this statement when I catch myself judging.

In Eckhart Tolle’s book, A New Earth, Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose, he writes: “If you can be absolutely comfortable with not knowing who you are, then what’s left is who you are – the Being behind the human, a field of pure potentiality rather than something that is already defined.” I am no longer defined as the “victim” and don’t care how others define me and work at just being.

Bottom line, we have to take responsibility for our inner peace and stay in the moment.  To get out of ego is simply during your day being aware of your thoughts and emotions.  You alone can shift your mind-set from negativity to positivity.  Jesus preached in his message: “ I am the way and the truth and the life” and this essentially is living authentically – we are life, we are light, we are Spirit .

of my life. Great opportunities
are worth the risk."
